Opened in 1993, the Hickory Ridge Public Golf Center is owned and operated by the Carbondale Park District. One of the most challenging courses in the Southern Illinois Golf Association, (Golf Digest, 4 Stars Rating for six consecutive years) this championship caliber 18 hole layout plays over 6800 yards from the back tees and has a distinctive links appearance – even though the course cuts through the typically hilly local terrain, and retains many of the natural rows and stands of hardwoods and pines.

The course earns its 137 slope rating from a combination of occasional length and challenging greens. Hickory Ridge features 50 river-sand bunkers and prominent grass mounds bracketing most of the Zoysia fairways.

The Penn Cross Bent grass greens are abundantly contoured and roll true – placing a premium on accurate iron play in order to score well.

The fairways are marked with interval discs on either side and PVC stakes bordering the fairways 150 yards from the greens. Pin position depth is marked by a small flag on each pin – high is back and low is front, etc.

The wall to wall irrigation system combined with durable Zoysia trees and fairways allows the course to tolerate heavy play very well and, weather permitting, it stays open to the public all year. Tee times may be routinely reserved seven days in advance and earlier for larger groups.

The Hickory Ridge Public Golf Center is the home course for the Southern Illinois University Women’s Golf Team and also hosts the Saluki Invitational each March and SIGA Players Cup each May.

Hickory Ridge Public Golf Center is located two miles north of Illinois 13 on the west side of Carbondale. Follow New Era Road north from Highway 13 and turn left of Glen Road,
